Defeating Discouragement: The Lifesaving Ministry of an Encourager.
When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent BARNABAS to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this proof of God's favor, he was filled with joy, and HE ENCOURAGED THE BELIEVERS to stay true to the Lord. Acts 11:22-23.
One of the most effective strategies that Satan uses to mess up our lives is discouragement.
How many times have you gone through difficulties that left you feeling hopeless and helpless? Have you ever felt like giving up? In those heavy moments, what we often need most isn't complex advice—it is simply a warm smile, a comforting hug, and a genuine word of encouragement.
The Biblical Example: Barnabas, the Son of Encouragement
The New Testament introduces us to a remarkable man who embodied this ministry of presence and care. His name was Barnabas.
In Acts 4:36–37, Scripture tells us that his name literally means "one who encourages others." But Barnabas did not just speak words of comfort; his encouragement was active, generous, and sacrificial:
Generosity in Action: He sold a piece of land he owned and willingly brought the proceeds to lay at the apostles' feet to help his brothers and sisters in Christ.
Standing by the Suffering: When others were skeptical, Barnabas stood faithfully at Paul’s side. He selflessly assisted him through difficult times and partnered with him in dynamic ministry (Acts 9:27, 13:1–3).
In Acts 11:24, the Bible summarizes his life with a powerful testimony: "He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith."
Myth vs. Reality: Do Christians Get Discouraged?
Some people suggest that Christians should never experience discouragement, but that simply isn't true.
Faith does not render us immune to trial, exhaustion, or grief. We all face seasons of weakness where we need others to hold up our hands. That is precisely when people like Barnabas become such a profound blessing in our lives.
The Bicycle Analogy: How an Encourager Works
The work of an encourager is very much like a parent teaching a child to ride a bicycle:
Holding On: At first, the parent holds onto the bicycle, providing stability until the child manages to find their balance.
Helping Up: If the child wobbles and falls, the parent doesn't scold them. They pick the child up, console them, and gently encourage them to get back on again.
Celebrating Victory: When the child is finally able to take off on their own, the parent stands back, celebrating the victory with pure joy.
An encourager is someone who stays by your side when you need support, lifts you up when you fall, makes sure you don't give up, and celebrates with you when you are finally able to stand on your own.
Transmitting Grace: The Call for Every Believer
It is essential for all Christians to cultivate the heart of an encourager. After all, this is exactly what God did for us through Christ Jesus.
Out of supreme love, Jesus became a human being so that He could bless us with eternal salvation. As one writer rightly stated:
"The Son of God became the Son of Man, that the sons of men might become the sons of God."
Encouragement is the most effective weapon we have to counter and defeat discouragement. It should permeate every relationship within the Body of Christ. When we choose to be supportive, we actively transmit the grace of God into the lives of others.
Be an encourager today!
