The Strength That Comes From God

Standing in the face of temptation

“…how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9b

Satan has a whole series of traps set with the hope of luring us into sin. He is extremely creative in the sexual area. Every single day we are faced with blatant erotic appeals (made worse by social media) and, unfortunately, curiosity is a trap that many fall into.

Everything begins with a mere interest in the things that have to do with the opposite sex. This curiosity leads people to seek answers to these mysteries and their questions. They may turn to resources such as pornographic literature or films that provoke erotic fantasies. These things can cause serious emotional damage.

Some people can’t even manage to appreciate and value the sanctity of sex in their own marriage and look for extra-marital affairs. These people soon discover that when the novelty wears off, all that is left is sadness and shame.

In order to say no to temptation, a person must be courageous, controlled, and committed to God’s will as revealed in His Word. Joseph managed to keep himself pure even when his employer’s wife tried to seduce him. Although he was completely innocent, she falsely accused him. Because he stood firm against temptation and was committed to honouring God, God also honoured him. His name evokes great respect even today and his example is a challenge to others.

Where did Joseph find the strength to guard his integrity? In God Himself. Our Father is the same yesterday, today and forever.  Read your Bible, pray, and put on the armour that God has provided for your protection against the enemy’s attacks (Ephesians 6:10-18). Follow in Joseph’s footsteps so you won’t do this great wickedness, and sin against God.
