When Judas gave Jesus a kiss, he wasn’t showing love or respect. Instead, he was handing Him over to death. He was been hypocritical and the Bible tells us he did this because “Satan entered into him” (John 13:27) Satan is called the father of lies, and he often uses lies and hypocrisy to destroy relationships.
We are acting like Judas did whenever we use loving words or actions to hide ill motives. It is common for this to happen at work. Sometimes an employee will offer excessive praise to his boss in order to get a promotion. It can also be common in our friendships. Maybe we will call someone and go on and on about how much we have missed them when all we really want is a favor or money. It happens in families too. A child will be very well behaved in order to cover something wrong that he has done. A husband will flatter his wife in order to try to cover up his sin. These are only a few examples of how we are all tempted to be hypocritical in our daily lives.
Words can either build up or destroy. A lie, when it is discovered, can mean the end of the confidence that exists between a husband and wife. Hypocrisy, when it is revealed, shows up the selfishness in the human heart and discredits the person who has used it. These two sins, lying and hypocrisy can destroy people and destroy relationships.
That’s why we need to be careful what we say! are your words full of love or loaded with venom? We Christians have come to know forgiveness and new life in Jesus. If you believe in Him, live your new life authentically, sincerely, honestly always tell the truth- but do it with love.
